How big is a chapbook?

A chapbook is usually 20 to 40 pages, holding roughly 15 to 30 poems, at a small trade size such as 5.5 by 8.5 inches or A5. The upper limit is set by the binding: saddle stitch holds up to about 48 pages.

Why the limit is physical

A saddle-stitched chapbook is folded sheets stapled on the spine. Every sheet is four pages, and past a dozen or so sheets the fold will not close cleanly and the staples will not reach. That is why the form tops out around 48 pages before it has to become a full collection, perfect bound.

How many poems

Fifteen to thirty is normal, depending on length. The count matters less than the coherence: a chapbook should read as one held breath, not a sampler. See what a chapbook is.
