The chapbook is a physical tradition as much as a literary one: short, cheaply printed, and made to be handed around.

Why illustration is rare in a chapbook

A chapbook is printed cheaply, often in two colours on a riso press, and every extra plate costs a run. Illustration therefore has to earn its place: it is not decoration but a second voice. When it works, the picture carries what the prose deliberately leaves unsaid.

Floater

The one illustrated title here is Floater by Kate Bernheimer, illustrated by Noah Saterstrom. The illustrations sit against a quiet text about a girl and a town's silences, and they do the work a cover alone cannot.
